You've probably heard about the $15 million in medical debt John Oliver forgave on HBO's "Last Week Tonight" Sunday, but, he also referenced Arizona.
Oliver's segment delves into debt collectors -- companies that buy people's personal debt at a fraction of the cost -- and the ease at which someone could get into the business, acquire someone's personal information, and follow up on what they owe.
Arizona is one of a few states referenced that loosened its regulations for debt collectors.
"There are places in this country where you need to fill out less paperwork to start collecting money from people's pockets than you do to collect fish," Oliver quips.
In May 2012, then-Gov. Jan Brewer signed House Bill 2664 into law. The bill allows debt collectors to establish how much someone owes by looking at their final billing statement.
As Oliver notes, the information is sold to debt collectors "as is" -- so it may not be accurate.
