How your income compares to others in US

CINCINNATI - Income inequality -- the growing disparity between rich and poor — is a hotly debated issue in our nation.

In order to better understand this issue, personal finance gurus at Kiplinger created a tool that helps you figure out where you fit in.

Does your income put you in the top 1 percent of richest Americans? In the bottom 50 percent? Somewhere in between?

Kiplinger's tool shows how the nation's taxable income and the country's federal income tax bill are distributed among its citizens.

According to Kiplinger, in order be in the top 50 percent of earners, you must make at least $34,823.

Fall below that level and you are in the bottom half, along with about 68 million of your fellow taxpayers.

CLICK HERE to use the calculator and see if you're in the top 1 percent, 5 percent, 10 percent, 25 percent, 50 percent – or the bottom 50 percent of income earners.

To use the tool, you must enter a single number from your latest tax return and you'll instantly know the answer.
