Hernando detention deputy Cody Marrone fired after admitting he burned son, 3, with hair dryer

HERNANDO COUNTY, FL - Hernando County detention deputy Cody Marrone was fired after he admitted to severely burning his 3-year-old with a hair dryer because the boy would not let him sleep, investigators say.

Marrone was arrested on Friday, and faces charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect.

Deputies were called to Spring Hill Regional Hospital on Friday afternoon regarding a 3-year-old boy with severe burn marks.

Deputies noted that the boy's burns were not accidental and launched an investigation.

During the investigation, Marrone reportedly advised that while the boy was in his care, the boy caused the injuries to himself with a hair dryer.

After questioning, Marrone admitted to using the hair dryer to burn the child on several parts of his body, including his genitals, as a form of punishment because the child would not let him sleep, deputies say.

Marrone, who joined the Sheriff's office in July 2012, is being held on $20,000 bond.
