8.0 pacific earthquake: Nine dead, villages destroyed in Solomons tsunami

SYDNEY - Aid workers are struggling to reach remote villages in the Solomon Islands that were ravaged by a tsunami following a powerful earthquake yesterday.

At least nine people were killed in the South Pacific country. The death toll rose as bodies were found amid wrecked homes and debris today.

The quake sent five-foot waves roaring inland on Santa Cruz Island, in the eastern Solomons. About 100 homes in five villages were damaged or destroyed.

A spokesman for the prime minister says the dead included five elderly villagers and a child who weren't fast enough to outrun the rushing water.

Six years ago, more than 50 people were killed and thousands lost their homes when a quake hit the western Solomon Islands, sending waves crashing into coastal villages.
