19 thwarted bomb attacks meant for the USA since September 11, 2001

PHOENIX - Here is a list of some of the thwarted bomb attacks in, or intended for, the United States by suspects with a variety of motivations since Sept. 11, 2001:        

-- Dec. 12, 2001: Jewish Defense League plot to blow up the King Fahd Mosque in Culver City, Calif.

-- Dec. 22, 2001: Self-proclaimed al Qaida member Richard Reid attempted to detonate C-4 explosives in his shoe while on a flight to Miami.

-- May 8, 2002: Jose Padilla arrested after returning from Pakistan for allegedly attempting to build a dirty bomb.

-- August 2004: Al Qaeda plan based in Pakistan and England to bomb the International Monetary Fund, New York Stock Exchange, Citigroup and Prudential buildings.

-- Aug. 28, 2004: Two men arrested after attempting to bomb the New York subway system on the day before the Republican National Convention.

-- June 2006 -- The Animal Liberation Front targeted with a firebomb a UCLA professor who used animals in research

-- June 2006: Seven men arrested after allegedly plotting to bomb the Sears Tower in Chicago and FBI offices.

-- July 2006: Man arrested after allegedly attempting to bomb New York train tunnels and flood the financial district.

-- April 25, 2007: A bomb was left in a women's clinic in Austin, Texas.

-- June 3, 2007: Four men arrested after plot revealed to bomb the fuel lines at JFK Airport in New York.

--May 20, 2009: Four men arrested in New York after plot to blow up two synagogues and shoot down a U.S. military aircraft.

--Sept. 19, 2009: An Afghanistan native and five others were charged with allegedly intending to bomb the New York City subway system.

-- Dec. 25, 2009: Self-described al Qaeda member Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempted to ignite explosives in his underpants aboard an airliner over Detroit, Mich.

-- May 1, 2010: Attempted car bombing in New York City's Times Square, by Pakistan Taliban members foiled when street vendor saw smoke coming from an SUV and called police.

-- Oct. 27, 2010: A Pakistani-born Virginia man was arrested on charges of being involved with what he to0ught was an al-Qaeda plot to bomb and kill commuters in the Washington, D.C., area subway system.

-- Jan. 7, 2012: A native Albanian from Kosovo arrested for allegedly planning to bomb nightclubs, detonating a car bomb, using an assault rifle and wearing an explosive belt in a crowded area around Tampa, Fla.

-- Feb. 17, 2012: FBI arrested a Moroccan man for allegedly plotting to carry out a suicide bombing at the U.S. Capitol building.

-- Aug. 10, 2012: A person arrested after telling media outlets via email that he was going to blow up the Wainwright State Office Building in St. Louis.

-- Oct. 17, 2012: Bangladeshi man charged with trying to bomb the Federal Reserve building in New York City.
