Congress, Companies to meet about data privacy rules

A big fight is brewing in Congress about how to get companies to start protecting consumers' personal information.

Privacy officers from several tech giants like Amazon, Google and Twitter are expected to meet with lawmakers on Wednesday, during the Senate Committee on Commerce Science and Transportation.

They will "provide leading technology companies and internet service providers an opportunity to explain their approaches to privacy, how they plan to address new requirements from the European Union and California, and what Congress can do to promote clear privacy expectations without hurting innovation," according to a statement from Committee Chairman Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.)

But consumer privacy advocacy groups say they are not invited.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation says it is concerned that companies will "view this hearing as a chance to encourage Congress to adopt the weakest privacy protections possible-and eviscerate stronger state protections at the same time."
