Face coverings "strongly encouraged," not mandatory, when Florence Unified School District reopens

Just days after the Pinal County Board of Supervisors voted to highly encourage, but not mandate, the wearing of face-coverings in unincorporated areas of the county, the Florence Unified School District did the same as it released its reopening plan for the upcoming school year. ​

The district will offer two learning options, in-person and distance. All students will also attend digital learning days on July 22-24, with in-person instruction beginning July 27 for those who choose it. ​

Safety protocols will include physical distancing on buses and in classrooms when possible, keeping students in cohort groups, limiting or eliminating shared supplies, increased handwashing and eliminating assemblies or field trips. Face coverings for students and staff will be "strongly encouraged but not mandatory."​

The district's 27-page reopening plan also includes data from a family survey. Of the 2,186 responses, 49 percent of families said they planned to send their child to in-person classes, while 42 percent said "Maybe." When it comes to children wearing masks at school, 35 percent said they were "very uncomfortable" with the idea, nearly 24 percent said they were "very comfortable."​
