Avondale police have arrested a man after a four-vehicle crash on Thursday left one girl dead and three others injured.

The crash happened Thursday afternoon near Dysart and Osborn roads.

On Friday, Avondale police announced the arrest of Tollie Matthews, one of the drivers of one of the vehicles involved.

Court paperwork shows that Matthews took two Oxycodone pills before driving the car. He reportedly collided with a vehicle that was also traveling southbound on Dysart. The collision caused that car to cross over the raised median and hit another vehicle going northbound.

That car, in turn, hit another vehicle.

One girl was killed in the crash as she was trapped inside the car as it was engulfed in flames.

The girl who died was identified by police as Amanda Moreno, a senior at Agua Fria High School.

Another person remains hospitalized in critical condition with multiple broken bones.

Court paperwork shows that Matthews had a prior DUI conviction and was supposed to be driving a vehicle with an ignition interlock device. Police say the car he was in did not have that device.

Matthews was booked into jail on counts of reckless manslaughter, aggravated assault, endangerment, and aggravated DUI, police said.
