Residents of a homeless shelter come to the aid of a victim of an attempted strangulation.

Court records show that on November 20, a man tried to strangle another man with a lanyard but was stopped by other residents of a homeless shelter near 12th Avenue and Jefferson Street.

Police report that 32-year-old Lazarus Miguel walked by the victim who was sitting in a chair and offered him a cookie. Witnesses say the victim politely denied the cookie, but later Miguel returned and allegedly grabbed the lanyard from around the victims' neck and pulled on it. He also allegedly put his hand over the victim's mouth.

Police say the victim nearly passed out and, "was still seated and slumped in his chair and slowly began regaining consciousness as others came to his aid." Miguel left the area but was soon caught by police.

He's been charged with aggravated assault.
