A Mesa couple detained a burglar after the suspect was seen stealing multiple items from their backyard shed.

Mesa police report that on Aug. 5 they were called to a home near Country Club Drive and Main Street and found 25-year-old Devon Lee Mitchel being held to the ground by a resident.

A woman told police that she was inside her home when she saw the suspect on her front patio, court paperwork said. Mitchel was holding several items taken from her shed including a heater, generator, and bicycle.

She confronted Mitchel who allegedly told her, "[He] was sent by his father 'Diablo' to retrieve the items."

Her husband and his cousin were outside a neighbor's home and saw what was happening, court paperwork said. They came over and tried to detain Mitchel who was trying to ride away on a bike.

As the men struggled with Mitchel, the woman became concerned for their safety and retrieved a handgun from her home.

She pointed the gun at Mitchel who then agreed and stay down until police arrived.

Mitchel has been charged with burglary and disorderly conduct.
