After 35 years with Scottsdale-based Universal Technical Institute Inc., Kim McWaters is retiring as CEO, effective Oct. 31.

Starting as a receptionist at the age of 20, McWaters moved up the company ladder to become president and CEO of the publicly traded company that focuses on preparing students for careers in the automotive repair field.

During the past few years, enrollment declined and the company was in financial turmoil, but McWaters set the company back on track and now enrollment is beginning to tick up again.

"I feel like it's OK to go now," she told the Business Journal.
