Honoree, Alan "AP" Powell served in the U.S. Army during Operation Desert Storm. His outstanding service earned him the Army Service Ribbon and a National Defense Service Medal.
Alan's career carried over to civilian life and the founder of a non-profit called Checkered Flag Run Foundation. The mission is the help provide diverse educational programs that impact under-served students and veterans. Alan believes access to quality educational opportunities ensures the investment of every student & Veteran getting to cross the "finish line."
The Foundation's latest program, HeroZona, was a week-long Veterans Day engagement that provides Arizona's 640,000-plus veterans a multi-day networking event. HeroZona gained national and local recognition from the entire Arizona community with support from U.S. Senator John McCain, Governor Doug Ducey, Mayor Greg Stanton, Arizona Department of Veteran's Services, and many corporations and educational colleges. The Checkered Flag Run Foundation also promotes a program called 'Veterans Reach to Teach', which was created to lower the large number of teacher vacancies through connecting veterans to those teaching opportunities. Their program assists veterans and their spouses earn substitute teachers and permanent teacher's certifications.
