Vision Benefits - Use Them Before They Expire!

Did you know vision benefits included in your health plan expire at the end of the year? If you were unaware of this, then you’re included in a large group of people who didn’t know “use it or lose it” applies to vision health insurance. If you do not use up all the money allotted to you before December 31, 2017, it will not roll over into 2018.
That’s why the end of the year is the perfect time to get an eye exam, which is highly recommended to catch and treat eye conditions before they become major issues.
Insurance differs from provider to provider. However, most plans cover eyeglass frames, comprehensive eye exams, and even stipends that can be used for extra pairs of glasses. Contacts and contact exams are usually considered electives though some insurance companies will cover both. Before you make an appointment, be sure to call your insurance to see what exactly is or isn’t covered on your plan.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS - SAVE MONEY, SAVE YOUR HEALTH
Flexible spending accounts (FSA) are a special kind of health insurance plan in which your account balance is funded with pre-tax dollars in order to cover health care costs.
When you use pre-tax dollars to pay for health care costs, you save money by reducing taxable income.
You are not required to fund your FSA plan, and in some cases, your employer may contribute to the account, thereby giving you even more money to spend every year. With certain FSA plans you may be allowed a 1-2-month grace period to use up the monies allotted to you.
HOW TO MAXIMIZE VISION BENEFITS IN 2017
We said the money allotted to you in your 2017 vision health plan would not roll over to 2018, however, FSAs are the exception. If you have an FSA account, you might be surprised to learn that you will have a little money left over after buying your eye exam and glasses. You could utilize that money to buy accessories such as cleaning clothes or neck straps for glasses, or a backup pair of prescription sunglasses.

Before coming in to see us at Nationwide Vision, check with your insurance representative to see how much money you have allotted via your vision insurance or FSA plan. Then deduct the cost of the vision exam and then you’re free and clear to spend the remainder of the money in the FSA plan.
