When You Don't Look As Good As You Feel

Not a day goes by without a patient telling me, "I don't want to look twenty-five. I just want to look good for my age." Looking older than you feel is not something that needs to be tolerated. You don't have to look odd after these procedures either.  I have always held the philosophy that a natural appearing result in facial rejuvenation looks best.

If you are considering a spruce-up for yourself, read on.

In years gone by, many people who had cosmetic facial surgery looked odd. Even today, some of the Hollywood stars are practically unrecognizable after face and eyelid lifts. All I can say is those unfortunate individuals have had technically poor work done! The best way to create natural results is to use the properly selected tool for the problem at hand. For instance, Botox injections dramatically decrease wrinkling in the forehead, brow and eye area. Filler injections correct deeper furrows between the nose and mouth, mouth and jaw-line and those frequently detested wrinkles around the mouth. Doctor prescribed topical skin care and peels will improve the texture, pigmentation and luminosity of the skin. Surgery should only be used to correct gravitational changes such as sagging or excess skin. Many patients are good candidates for all of the above, and others only need non-invasive treatments. Some patients choose to have "everything done at once," while others prefer a more stepwise approach. A well-trained, board certified, and experienced plastic surgeon will help you decide what options are best for you to create the results you desire.

It seems fairly obvious that taking shortcuts with the treatment of your face is not a good idea, but judging by the amount of revisionary facial surgery I do, it is not obvious to everyone. When you are looking for a plastic surgeon, make sure they are board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and not the cosmetic surgery board. Also check to see if they are a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS, surgery.org), which signifies they perform a great deal of cosmetic surgery. I also feel that a minimum of ten years experience is very important. Discounts, deals and bargain basement fees should generally indicate the need for extreme caution. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Any plastic surgeon you meet with should be able to show you a large volume of pre and post-operative photos and should review photos of you at a younger stage of life. This ensures the surgeons interest in creating a better version of you, not someone who is unrecognizable to friends and family.

I saved the best news for last. These procedures do not come with a painful recovery! While swelling and bruising are common for a couple of weeks, most patients feel they can go out to dinner before three weeks have past. My staff and I look forward to meeting you.
