While it’s typically known that there are great deals to be had on new cars at the end of the year, those shopping for a new vehicle in the summer may also be pleasantly surprised. With a plethora of holidays in a short three-month period, these long weekends provide for ample sales in addition to dealer and automaker incentives. Additionally, late summer and early fall can often provide opportunities for price reductions ahead of new model year deliveries.

Add to these tips some good practices involving timing and you could save thousands on your purchase, even if you’re looking at used vehicles. Most people have heard that the end of the month is a great time to car shop, as dealers will often be looking to make quotas. Even better – look for deals at the end of each quarter. Shopping at the end of the month in March, June, September or December can lead to even greater deals. And finally, try shopping at the end of the day. Coming prepared to negotiate at the end of a weekday vs. early on a busy Saturday may net you a slightly better deal. If dealership employees are ready to go home on a day that may have netted slower traffic, they may not negotiate as hard or for as long in order to get the deal.

Whether shopping for new or used, test out these car buying tips to save you hundreds – or even thousands – on your next vehicle.
