Valley's Metro's "Polar Express" will be outfitted with holiday decorations, singing elves, cookies and a visit from Santa, according to its website. The experience is free and open to the public.

The train will depart from specific light rail platforms in Phoenix and Mesa on certain days in December, traveling a few stops before returning to the initial platform. It does not run the entire track.

It will travel through Mesa's Merry Main Street on Dec. 7, 8 and 15. It will depart from the light rail platform at Main Street and Mesa Drive and will travel back and forth from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.

This year, the experience will expand to Phoenix on Dec. 15. The train will depart from the platform at 19th Avenue and Dunlap Avenue and will travel back and forth from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.

The Polar Express experience isn't the first of its kind in our state. The Grand Canyon Railway has been running a one-of-kind train ride based on the Chris Van Allsburg book for the last 17 years, and it is still as magical as ever!
