Veterans groups, citizens and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey will gather at the state Capitol to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services is hosting the state's Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday at the Wesley Bolin memorial plaza just east of the state Capitol.

The event starts at 10:15 a.m. and the official program kicks off at 10:55 a.m. Arizona time. That's the moment local time when planes from a group of Japanese aircraft carriers launched their attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base and nearby military facilities, killing 1,177 Americans.

Nearly half the dead were aboard the battleship USS Arizona, which was sunk.

The program includes a flyover by a B-17 bomber and a C-47 transport.
