Grand Central Coffee House in downtown Phoenix is no longer just a coffee house.
Since quietly opening a few months ago, "The Grand" has since evolved into a 24-hour cafe, study area for college students, casual restaurant and bar all housed within a 15,000-square-foot space designed after a New York train station.
The drink and menu boards are reminiscent of a train schedule, clocks show times for major cities such as New York, Chicago and, of course, Phoenix. Anything deemed to be eclectic can be found on the walls and hanging from the ceiling.
Soon it will be home to its very own speakeasy-type bar -- Sanctum.
The name Sanctum may sound familiar. It was the name of a now-closed nightclub that Steven Rogers opened. He has since revived the name, but changed the concept.
Sanctum, speakeasy-style private room
The speakeasy-version of Sanctum will be located on The Grand's upper level. It is intimate with four high tops, a table or two, a couch and a small bar. Three portholes look out to the main level entrance and bar.
Rogers said Sanctum will be mainly used for private events and parties, although he may open it on the intermittent weekends. If he goes that route, because of its size, there will be a special password required to get in.
The Grand's kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner which a variety of salads, soups, and hot or cold sandwiches. They also recently launched a brunch menu.
