PHOENIX — The opening of the Fry's grocery store in downtown Phoenix, a first for the area, has been pushed back a month.

The 67,000-square-foot urban store is now expected to open in late October, the company said in a news release this week. A specific opening date has yet to be announced. It was initially expected to open in late September, a spokesperson told ABC15 earlier this summer.

When it opens, it will be part of the "Block 23" development, a 230,000-square-foot residential-office-retail complex currently being built by RED Development near Washington and First streets, and within walking distance of CityScape, Talking Stick Resort Arena, Chase Field, and a number of downtown apartments and neighborhoods.

As previously reported, the grocery store will have a lot of the same amenities that its other grocery stores have: a pharmacy, Starbucks, deli, bakery, online ordering, delivery, and curbside pick-up.

Earlier this week, Fry's announced that the downtown store would also have a sushi station with grab-and-go rolls and nigiri, and that Chompie's would have an area inside with sliders, sandwiches, including the Reuben, soups, breakfast items, and pre-packed meals.

It will be the second Fry's grocery store in the Valley to have an expanded Chompie's area. Earlier this month, Chompie's opened an expanded kitchen at the Fry's Signature store near Shea and Tatum boulevards, according to a blog post on its website.Chompie's breads, bagels, English muffins, and butter cookies can already be found at some Fry's stores across the Valley.

Block 23 will also be home to 320 luxury apartments from StreetLights Residential, Sam Fox's Blancos Tacos and Tequila, and offices for Ernst and Young, and WeWork. All three are expected to open in the fall, a spokesperson told ABC15. Specific opening dates have not yet been announced.

NEW FRY'S COMING TO GILBERT

Earlier this week, Fry's broke ground on a 125,000-square-foot Fry's Marketplace store in Gilbert. It will anchor the City Gate shopping center being built near Higley and Baseline Roads. It is expected to open in spring 2020, said Pam Giannonatti, Kroger corporate affairs manager for the Fry's division.
