Fire erupts at north Phoenix apartment complex

PHOENIX - Fire crews have contained a blaze that erupted at a north Phoenix apartment complex Friday morning.

Air15 video showed thick smoke billowing from an office at the Pillar at Scottsdale complex near Scottsdale and Bell roads around noon. Flames could also be seen burning through the building's roof.

Phoenix Fire Department Capt. Tony Mure said crews from both Phoenix and Scottsdale responded to assist in fighting the first-alarm fire.

A 911 caller reportedly told officials that soldering work was being done in the attic of the complex's leasing office at the time the fire broke out.

Crews initially made an aggressive interior attack but were forced out by the amount of flames and danger to firefighters, Mure said.

Fire crews could be seen dousing the flames from multiple ladders.

The fire was contained at 12:40 p.m. Fifty firefighters were on the scene, including five pumpers, two ladders and support vehicles.

Mure said the fire was accidental. He said the apartment complex was having work done in the leasing office by a heating and cooling repair company when the fire started. The repairman was in the attic trying to repair a leak in the cooling system.

No one was injured in the fire.
