National Weather Service: 'Weak' EF0 tornado appeared over Mesa during Saturday storms

MESA, AZ - One day after heavy winds, rain and hail pelted parts of the Valley, the National Weather Service has confirmed that a "weak" tornado did develop over Mesa Saturday afternoon.

The NWS Phoenix office said the small EF0 tornado appeared near Extension Road and Main Street near the Palm Cove Apartments in Mesa.

Shaina Tates, 17, posted an image onto the ABC15 Facebook page Saturday showing damage to the roof of the apartment complex.

According to Tate, she watched the storm move through her area with her mom and dad and noticed a "funnel." She said the funnel never made it to the ground, but did skim the top of a nearby apartment complex throwing debris into the air and causing the roof to be damaged.

Tate's mom, Wendy, said it was something she had never seen before.

ABC15 reporter Lauren Vargas spoke to residents at the apartment who also said they saw the funnel cloud. One woman reported that she saw a hot tub fly into the air.

Due to the storm, the parking lot of the apartment complex had flooded areas, trees were uprooted and the back window of a vehicle had been shattered.

The NWS said that damage and eye witnesses confirmed that there was a tornado in the area.
