Loop 101 back open after major crash in Scottsdale

SCOTTSDALE, AZ - The Loop 101 is back open in Scottsdale after a major crash shut it down for seven hours Friday morning.

Seven vehicles were involved in the incident just before 3 a.m. on southbound Loop 101 at Chaparral Road, said the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

There were two separate collisions that caused a chain reaction crash, DPS said.

Southbound Loop 101 was closed from Indian Bend Road to McDonald Drive until 10 a.m. causing major delays for commuters.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said the massive crash began when a suspected impaired driver rear-ended a car. According to Graves, another vehicle struck the first two cars, and was then struck by a fourth vehicle also driven by a suspected impaired driver.

Four people were injured, but none are believed to be life-threatening, officials said. The female driver in the first vehicle reportedly suffered a head injury.

One of the vehicles involved was a taxi cab.
