Whew! It's over! Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin can now breathe a little easier. The two D-backs just wrapped up their first ever trip to the All-Star Game , joining 32 other players who were playing in their first All-Star Game as well.
Almost shocking, but of the 68 players in uniform at Citi Field, 34 were there for the first time.
But let's talk more about our Diamondbacks. First, our All-Star pitcher, Pat Corbin: The soon to be 24-year-old, got into the game in the fourth inning and before he knew it, he had Miguel Cabrera on third and Chris Davis on first, with no outs. Not exactly the way he wanted to get things started!
When Corbin entered the game, the TV analysts threw up a graphic to explain that the American League hadn't scored a run in the All-Star Game in 17 consecutive innings. Ugh!
So when Cabrera hit that double, and then Davis smacked a line drive single into right, things weren't looking good. Jose Bautista then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field and that scored Cabrera.
Things improved for Corbin when he got David Ortiz (yeah, that David Ortiz) to hit into a double play and end the inning. Unfortunately, Corbin takes the loss and will forever remain in the record books as the losing pitcher in the 2013 MLB All-Star Game.
Paul Goldschmidt got into the game in the fifth inning, playing first base, but didn't get to the plate until the seventh. In his first at-bat, Goldschmidt grounded out, but in the bottom of the ninth, with the American League up 3-0, Goldy let loose, knocking a stand up double into deep right.
When all was said and done, Goldschmidt's hit didn't change the outcome, but I'm sure it made him feel a lot better about his first All-Star Game. He did get to play five innings as well.
So the American League wins the 84th All-Star Game and secures home field advantage in the 2013 World Series. Final Score: American League 3 – National League 0.
For Diamondbacks Paul Goldschmidt and Patrick Corbin, happy they were able to be there together. Congratulations to our two Arizona Diamondbacks All-Stars!
