NASCAR returns to Valley: What to expect from weekend races

AVONDALE, AZ - Avondale is the place to be this weekend with NASCAR races starting Friday night at Phoenix International Raceway!

It's a massive event for the city and draws in thousands of fans from across the country.

Many have already  packed the parking lot in RVs and the party is well underway. The die-hard fans camp out and eat, sleep and drink NASCAR for five days.

The big race, the Subway Fresh Fit 500, gets going Sunday afternoon.

It's the second race of the Nationwide Series and helps decide this season's big contenders.

All the best drivers will by vying for a top spot, including rookie Alex Bowman. The Tucson native drives the #99 Toyota car.

It's his first season driving full time in the Nationwide Series and he hopes to make a name for himself.

On Friday, he told an ABC15 crew he wants to beat Jimmie Johnson, who just won the Daytona 500.

Mexico's NASCAR series kicks off the races Friday night at 7 p.m. This historic event marks the first time an international NASCAR series will race in the U.S.
