Mike Bibby booted from gym (BLOG)

Kids win game, dad loses cool

When the Phoenix Shadow Mountain boys basketball team won Friday night, it snapped a 24-game winning streak by Sierra Linda.

But that's not the only thing that snapped.

Mike Bibby got ejected and then escorted. Ejected from the game by the refs and escorted out of the gymnasium by Scottsdale police.

Of course, nearly twenty years ago, Bibby led Shadow Mountain to its first state basketball championship (followed by a national title at UA and then a 14 year NBA career).

This season, Bibby has been attending games to watch his son – point guard Michael Bibby.

As usual, Bibby was in the stands for this sectional game. He was arguing with the refs until he was forced to leave with a police escort, thereby creating quite the memorable moment – for all the wrong reasons.

Our free advice? During games, Mike Bibby should act just like his #10 jersey that hangs on the wall of the Shadow Mountain gymnasium. Not make a sound. Simply watch. Be the strong silent type of parental unit.

In other words, when an entire high school gym is abuzz with the presence of a former NBA star, the most important thing that Mike Bibby can do for his son and the rest of a young and impressionable team? Serve as a good example.

And we get it, professional athletes don't become the .01% without a competitive fire that's in the 99th percentile. And, for any parent, it's already ultra-difficult to sit idly by and watch your kid(s) participate in any endeavor.

It's one thing when a kid points into the stands to point out his (famous) Dad. But it's another matter when the rest of the gym points to the father who's being taken out of the stands by the cops.

By the way, did we mention that Michael Bibby is just a freshman? Yes, three more seasons are straight ahead.
