PHOENIX - A couple years ago, with former #1 overall pick Justin Upton entering the prime of his career, the AZ Diamondbacks dubbed the right field stands "UpTown."
Turns out, the more accurate branding would've had the banners screaming: "Out of Town."
Or, perhaps the banner should've read like an ad on Craigslist: "For Sale – D-backs franchise player. Contact K.T. the GM to make offer."
Once again, the player that Dbacks fans (and front office?) thought would be patrolling right field for the next decade is on the block. And it's far from the first time that the 25-year old has been around the block.
Whether it's the GM meetings, the trade deadline, or the winter meetings that are currently taking place – Upton always becomes the subject of more rumors than Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan. Combined.
For instance, the following tweet came out Tuesday afternoon via ESPN MLB reporter Pedro Gomez: "Phillies and Diamondbacks are discussing Justin Upton for Cliff Lee. Money coming to AZ would also be involved."
Thing is, before we could even debate the value of trading for the 34-year old Lee in the midst of a 5 year, $120 million contract, it got cut down faster than an overweight catcher trying to steal second base.
"We typically do not comment on rumors," said Phillies GM Ruben Amaro on MLB Network. "But that's one I'll comment on – that's absolutely false ."
Considering that Dbacks manager Kirk Gibson also blew the report out of the Dbacks rightfield pool water, the "D" in Dback stands for "Done," right? Wrong.
Make that "Deal" again. Because, no less than a couple hours later, another round of reports emerged. This time, the Upton-Lee swap "could just be a start." That's according to Yahoo Sports, which adds: "Arizona is discussing all sorts of three-and-four-way deals to get shortstop."
Put it this way – we don't who the Dbacks are getting. But we definitely know who's going. Call him J-Up, Up & Away.
