PHOENIX - The 2013 high school football season came to an end on Saturday, November 30 and it ended just as it started, with the Mountain Pointe Pride playing in both the first game of the season and the last.
Hamilton Huskies vs. Mountain Pointe Pride – Division I Championship
The undefeated Pride took on the Hamilton Huskies at University of Phoenix Stadium, with Mountain Pointe looking for its first state championship.
Hamilton's special teams put on quite a show in the first quarter, with Josiah Pola coming through with a couple of incredible punts: The first one backed up Mountain Pointe to their own one yard line and the second was equally as impressive with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter.
Hamilton scored first with a pitch to Tyrell Smith and the Huskies took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. But Mountain Pointe responded, scoring three unanswered touchdowns. A pass from Antonio Hinojosa to Emmanuel Butler made it 21-7 Mountain Pointe at halftime.
The Huskies answered in the third when Jaquan Mayberry returned a punt 79 yards for a Hamilton touchdown and it was 21-13 Mountain Pointe. But the Pride pulled away in the fourth and won their first state championship in school history.
The Mountain Pointe Pride are your 2013 Division I State Champions, after beating the Hamilton Huskies 42-19.
Chaparral Firebirds vs. Salpointe Catholic Lancers – Division II
Turning to the Division II Title game, it was the Chaparral Firebirds and Salpointe Catholic Lancers squaring off in a Friday night game at Arizona Stadium in Tucson.
The Firebirds jumped out to a 6 point lead when Tyler Whiley carried it in from two yards out, but Salpointe came right back to tie the game at 6 when Andrew Cota hit Kaelin Deboskie from 7 yards out.
But with the Lancers up 12-6, Chaparral quarterback Sean Paul Brophy dropped back to pass, scrambled, but ended up fumbling the football and Salpointe recovered it, returning the turnover to inside the Chaparral 10 yard line.
Salpointe scored on a 98 yard slant route from Cota to Cam Denson and that put the Lancers up 26-6. And then, check out the one-handed catch in the end zone by Denson. With that catch, the Lancers took a 39-13 lead midway through the third quarter.
Salpointe Catholic is your 2013 Division II State Champions, beating Chaparral 46-20.
Queen Creek Bulldogs vs. Saguaro Sabercats – Division III
The Queen Creek Bulldogs faced the Saguaro Sabercats in the Division III championship game.
With Saguaro up 7-0, Junior Christian Kirk scored his second touchdown of the game to give the Sabercats a 13-0 lead.
In the 2nd quarter with Saguaro up 20-12, Kirk took it 54 yards to increase the Sabercats lead 26-12. Then on a 4th and 18, Kirk scored again, this time on a 30 yard wide receiver screen.
Kirk finished the day with four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground.
Sabercats quarterback Luke Rubenzer finished with 230 yards passing and three touchdowns through the air, giving him the state record for most touchdown passes in a season with 61. He also ran for 78 yards and a touchdown.
Saguaro won their 7th state championship with a 47-25 win over Queen Creek.
Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets vs. River Valley Dust Devils – Division IV
In Division IV, the Blue Ridge Yellow Jackets faced the River Valley Dust Devils. Coach Paul Moro led Blue Ridge to another state championship. They beat River Valley 17-7.
Round Valley Elks vs. Yuma Catholic Shamrocks – Division V
In Division V, the Round Valley Elks were up against the defending state champion Yuma Catholic Shamrocks.
Yuma Catholic won the 2013 state championship convincingly, 63-35.
