Week four of the 2013 high school football season features a number of outstanding games and ABC15's Friday Night Blitz has you covered.
Here's a preview of five of the best matchups on the high school gridiron.
Players to Watch: Scottsdale Desert Mountain quarterback Kyle Allen is closing in on former Desert Vista quarterback John Rattay's Division I career passing record of 7,089 yards. Rattay set the record playing from 1997 to 1999. Allen is currently at 6,504.
#2 Mountain Pointe vs. #4 Chandler
This week, our Game of the Week has #2 Mountain Pointe and #4 Chandler.
This is a game a lot of high school football fans have been waiting for! While some are saying the Hamilton at Mountain Pointe game next week will be the game of the year, this week's matchup should provide plenty of fireworks. The Mountain Pointe Pride are now 4-0 and averaging 56.5 points per game. But the Pride haven't been really tested since week one when they beat Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in the Barry Sollenberger Classic.
Chandler is coming off a loss to California's St. John Bosco, but the Wolves had a 28-17 lead at halftime before giving up 35 points in the second half.
Again, expect a classic high school football shoot-out at Chandler High.
Red Mountain at #10 Brophy Prep
In another exciting Division I game, the Red Mountain High School Mountain Lions are at #10 Brophy Prep. Red Mountain may be the best 0-3 team in Division I, with clearly one of the toughest schedules in the State. Although the Mountain Lions scored 14 in a 21-14 loss last week to Westview, the Lions will find it even tougher to score this week against a stingy Bronco defense. In fact, given the fact that both teams play pretty good defense, I wouldn't expect this one to be a high scoring event, but it should be a fun game to watch as the Mountain Lions try to get win number one of the season and the Broncos are still looking to salvage a season that's started with two losses and an injury to starting quarterback Brian Woodward.
#4 Chaparral (Division II) at #8 Desert Mountain (Division I)
The rivalry along Shea should be another great high school football game, with both teams providing plenty of offense. Desert Mountain's twin stars, quarterback Kyle Allen and star receiver, Mark Andrews should give fans plenty to cheer about, but the Firebirds won't back down to anyone. With two solid offenses, this one could come down to which defense can at least slow down the other team's offense.
Thunderbird at #7 Tempe
Wow! Buffaloes quarterback Emmanuel Gant has a big time arm and he leads the East Valley with 1,022 passing yards in three games and has 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions. Tempe scored 51 points against Flagstaff Coconino and 69 points against Rival McClintock last Friday night. Expect more of the same this week! Running back Kam'ron Johnson has 249 yards rushing in two games, while receiver Massiah Smith has 407 yards receiving and five touchdowns.
Expect the Thunderbird Chiefs to have a tough time stopping the powerful Tempe offense. This one could be a lopsided affair.
#7 Pinnacle at #6 Basha
The Pioneers came close against #1 Hamilton last Friday night, losing to the Huskies 24-20, so you can expect Pinnacle to try and pull off a win this week at Basha. Pinnacle has the strength with running back Josh Hoekstra, quarterback Brian Lewerke and receiver Danny Galindo, but Basha quarterback Zach Werlinger has 854 yards passing so far this season with ten touchdowns and no interceptions.
With two solid programs, this one could go down to the wire. Expect another close game for the Pioneers, but don't count either team out.
