The Sterlings are talking and TV audiences aren’t the only ones watching.
In the third meeting of the NBA Advisory/Finance Committee, including Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, the league reports topics of discussion included “recent media appearances by Donald Sterling and Shelly Sterling.”
A day after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver reiterated his intention to force Donald Sterling to sell the LA Clippers, the committee met via conference call and “reviewed the status of the charge for termination of the Clippers’ ownership,” according to a league spokesman.
In a wide-ranging interview aired on CNN, Sterling criticized Magic Johnson in his first public comments since Silver banned him for life and fined him $2.5 million for making racist comments. In particular, Sterling repeatedly brought up the ex-NBA star's HIV and called him an unfit role model for children.
Silver formally apologized to Johnson in a statement, adding that owners were working "as expeditiously as possible" on the process for removal.
In an interview on Tuesday, Johnson says Sterling is “living in the stone ages” when it comes to attitudes about minorities.
In addition, the committee discussed the ABC-TV appearance of Shelly Sterling, who said she wants to keep her share of the franchise even if her estranged husband is forced to give up his. The NBA has stated that would not be allowed.
The NBA committee plans to reconvene next week.
