With a nod skyward to hoops heaven, we'd like to thank the basketball gods for smiling on our local pro basketball team.
Finally, that long-awaited dominant post player is coming to Phoenix. A rim-rattling, game changing phenom who brings upside and a nasty edge, not to mention a lengthy reel of highlight dunks.
Geez, how lucky are the Phoenix…Mercury.
Actually, the next big thing in women's basketball isn't coming to AZ. That's not accurate. Not when Brittney Griner is the biggest thing in women's hoops right now. In fact, she has been for a couple years now.
You know what? That might not be totally accurate either. At US Airways Center, make room on the marquee for the 6-foot-8 Griner, who will be the biggest hoops star in the building. Period.
When you have more dunks (18 & counting) than every other player in the history of women's college basketball combined, well, the next slam dunk will be the Merc making the 3-time All-American the number one pick in the upcoming WNBA Draft.
On Tuesday night, Griner poured in 33 points and pulled a career high 22 rebounds. And, oh yeah, did we mention her 3 dunks? Yes, in a single game, which qualifies as more hoops history.
At a recent guys night out (backyard BBQ with UFC pay-per-view bouts on the big screen), I witnessed sports talk amongst a bunch of dudes organically segue into awe and admiration for Griner's size and skills.
Ding. That's called moving the meter and crossing over (not a dribble, but reaching a new audience).
"I've seen her play (in person) a couple of games – she's amazing," Mercury Head Coach Corey Gaines said on ABC15 Sports Sunday. "They come along like this every one out of 10 years, so you want to take advantage of it."
That goes for all of us.
