Islanders double up Thrashers

Last Update: 11/07 10:44 pm

Matt Moulson and Blake Comeau each had a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders downed the Atlanta Thrashers, 6-3, at Nassau Coliseum.

Sean Bergenheim, Andy Sutton, Josh Bailey and Jack Hillen each had a goal for the Islanders, who had dropped their previous two games. Dwayne Roloson made 31 saves in the win.

"We had balanced scoring tonight," said Islanders head coach Scott Gordon. "Whenever you get scoring like that on a particular night its hard to defend against."

Christoph Schubert, Zach Bogosian and Pavel Kubina each lit the lamp for the Thrashers, who have lost six of their last eight games. Ondrej Pavelec started the game in net, but gave up five goals on 36 shots and was pulled after the second period. Johan Hedberg finished the game between the pipes and gave up one goal on nine shots.

"It was a good old fashioned whooping tonight," said Atlanta coach John Anderson. "We had three or four guys show up and no one else did, it's embarrassing"

The Islanders drew first blood in the game right before the mid-way mark of the first period as Sutton's backhander got past Pavelec, but Atlanta countered with 7:04 left in the opening frame on a wrister from Bogosian.

New York scored the final two goals of the first period as Bergenheim's first of the year at the 13:34 mark and Hillen's first of the season with 1:08 left in the frame gave the team a 3-1 lead.

Comeau scored a goal just 22 seconds into the second period to extend New York's lead to 4-1, but Kubina scored just over three minutes later to cut Atlanta's deficit to two goals.

However, Moulson extended New York's lead to three goals with his seventh of the season with 8:01 to play in the second.

Schubert made it a two-goal game with 7:57 to play with his first of the season, but Bailey got the goal back with 4:25 to play on the power play for the final goal of the game.
