Dwyane Wade went for 40 points and hit the go-ahead bucket with 24.6 seconds remaining in the game, as Miami pulled out a 93-89 victory over Washington.

Quentin Richardson chipped in 19 points and nine rebounds, while Udonis Haslem came off the bench for 13 and seven for the Heat, who were coming off their first loss of the season on Tuesday against Phoenix.

Gilbert Arenas paced the Wizards with 32 points. Brendan Haywood added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Caron Butler recorded a double-double as well with 13 and 10 in the team's second straight loss.

It was no more than a two-possession game throughout the fourth. Arenas hit a pair of free throws and Butler hit another to tie it, 87-87, with 2:48 left.

Arenas and Jermaine O'Neal traded field goals a few possessions later, and after each team turned the ball over, DeShawn Stevenson missed a pair of free throws with under a minute left.

Wade took advantage and beat Stevenson off the dribble before rising for a go- ahead jumper with 24.6 seconds to play.

Arenas lost control of the ball on a drive through the left side of the lane, and Wade missed 1-of-2 free throws to keep it a one-possession affair. The outcome was sealed when Arenas missed at the other end, giving Miami its fourth win of the young season.

It was all Heat in the first quarter, as they sped out to a 31-17 lead. The Wizards made it a one-point game near the five-minute mark of the second, but Miami scored 13 of the quarter's final 18 points for a 50-41 lead at halftime.

Washington fought its way back in the third, and six straight points late in the frame gave it a 66-64 lead. Wade's basket just before the buzzer tied things going into the final frame.
