Southbound I-17 reopens after vehicle hits man

CAMP VERDE, AZ - Interstate 17's southbound lanes have reopened at Camp Verde after a deadly accident involving a car and a pedestrian.

The state Department of Public Safety says the accident occurred just after 5 a.m. Friday when a vehicle struck a 54-year-old man who walked from the median into the path of the vehicle.

The DPS says the driver was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian and that investigators are trying to determine what the man was doing on the freeway.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says southbound traffic is being taken off I-17 at Middle Verde Road and then being detoured through Camp Verde.

ADOT says southbound travelers should expect delays and that there's no estimate on when the southbound lanes will reopen.
