Russell Pearce seeks to end subpoena dispute

PHOENIX - Attorneys for the chief sponsor of Arizona's 2010 immigration enforcement law are asking a judge to deny a request by immigrant rights advocates to force their client to turn over all his emails and documents about the contentious statute.

Groups challenging the law say former Arizona Sen. Russell Pearce has already provided a limited set of documents, but contend he made inadequate searches for all records sought by a subpoena.

Pearce's lawyers say their client turned over all documents called for by the subpoena.

The challengers are trying to prove the law was passed with discriminatory intent.

The immigrant rights advocates lost a similar dispute last week when a judge rejected a subpoena issued to a former Phoenix police union leader who voiced support for the 2010 law.
