A couple is in custody for allegedly planning a fake robbery against a Gila Bend McDonald's.

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, 24-year-old Ashley Stewart, an employee of McDonald's restaurants, was arrested for planning and executing a fake robbery of more than $22,000 in cash.

Deputies say on Monday Stewart called 9-1-1 saying that she was robbed of more than $22,000 while trying to deposit the cash for the restaurant at Western National Bank.

She reportedly told deputies that a man held her at gunpoint, took the cash from her, and then fled into the desert on foot.

After speaking with Stewart, deputies determined that her story and allegations had lacked credibility.

Stewart allegedly admitted to investigators that she was not robbed and had planned the fake robbery with her boyfriend, 35-year-old Alexander Reyna.

Deputies learned that Stewart was planning to meet up with Reyna after the planned robbery and then they would split the cash.

Both Stewart and Reyna face felony charges of theft.
