The Gila County Sheriff’s Office says an elderly woman played dead to deter attackers, who assaulted her inside her home.

According to GCSO, the 82-year-old woman says she was washing dishes around 3 a.m. on July 22 when two men broke into her home and assaulted her.

The incident happened at the woman’s home in Globe near Hunt Avenue and Central Heights.

To stop the attackers, GCSO says the woman pretended to be dead while laying on the ground for four hours before the men left her home.

GCSO says the woman was supposed to attend her husband’s funeral that same day but wasn’t able to because of her injuries.

The two men were wearing ski masks at the time of the assault, and at least one of them was described as having a stocky build. No further description has been made available.

It's unclear what, if anything, was taken from the home.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact the Gila County Sheriff’s Office through Detective Keith Charles at 928-402-4211.
