PHOENIX - To commemorate National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend and Fire Prevention Week, Gov. Jan Brewer ordered flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday.
In an e-mailed statement Brewer said that this year's tribute is especially poignant for Arizonans.
In June, 19 wildland firefighters were killed in the deadliest fire in state history.
"These elite Granite Mountain Hotshots, along with all of the men and women of our fire and emergency services, are heroes. They perform a selfless, inherently dangerous job, daily risking their lives in defense of perfect strangers and property. And, while they do not seek glory or gratitude, we owe it to them eternally," Brewer said.
