Suspect known as 'Smokey the Bandit' turns himself in

PHOENIX - The bank robbery suspect known as Smokey the Bandit turned himself in on Saturday after seeing photos of himself on local news, according to the Tucson Police Department.

William David Leverett, 48, was booked into the Pima County Jail on one count of Robbery regarding the incident at the Pima Federal Credit Union at 3730 North Stone Avenue on August 21, 2012.

He was charged with two more counts of Robbery in reference to incidents that occurred in the County.

Leverett had been wanted by the FBI for six bank robberies in Phoenix and Tucson, and had been labeled Smokey the Bandit due to his smell of cigarette smoke.
