Court urged to uphold Arizona abortion limitations

PHOENIX - Dozens of Arizona legislators are asking a federal appeals court to allow the state to implement new restrictions on use of abortion-inducing drugs.

A friend-of-the-court brief filed on behalf of 32 Republican legislators argues that the restrictions embody the Legislature's intent to protect the health and welfare of women seeking abortions.

In April, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an injunction temporarily blocking the new restrictions, saying women likely would suffer irreparable harm if the rules are allowed to take effect.

The restrictions include provisions on when, where and how women can take abortion-inducing drugs.

The restrictions were released in January by state health officials to implement part of a 2012 state law.

Planned Parenthood of Arizona and abortion rights groups are challenging the restrictions in court.
