Bill to oust Navajo council leader up for vote

WINDOW ROCK, AZ - Navajo Nation lawmakers are meeting Friday in a special session to consider ousting their legislative leader.

Johnny Naize has been under scrutiny since being charged with bribery and conspiracy in what prosecutors say was a scheme by tribal officials to divert money to their families. Naize has pleaded not guilty in the criminal case.

Naize survived a previous attempt by Delegate Alton Joe Shepherd to remove him from his post.

Since then, former Navajo lawmaker Raymond Joe pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery in the investigation of discretionary funds. Joe named Naize as a co-conspirator.

Shepherd says he believes his renewed legislation will garner increased support as a result.
