An Arizona mayor who declined to attend a border mayor's meeting because the invitation was in Spanish could face more scrutiny.

The Huachuca City Council plans to discuss Mayor Ken Taylor's comments at their meeting on Thursday.

Taylor had initially received an invite to an Aug. 24 U.S.-Mexico Border Mayors Association meeting from John Cook, a former El Paso mayor and executive director of the association. The Aug. 10 email was written in both English and Spanish.

The mayor did not take too kindly to Cook in his reply:

“I will not attend a function that is sent to me in Spanish/Mexican. One nation means one language and I am insulted by the division caused by language. Remove me from your email lists."

According to Huachuca City Town Clerk Tammy Mitchell, a council member could potentially suggest reprimand for Taylor at a future meeting.

Huachuca City Councilman Joann Wallace distanced himself from the mayor's remarks in an Aug. 12 Facebook post.

"I can assure you that his remarks are NOT synonymous with those of the citizens of our town," he wrote.

Taylor declined to comment when reached by ABC15 Tuesday.
