Arizona legislation bans more synthetic drugs

PHOENIX - Arizona legislators have approved emergency legislation to ban new versions of synthetic drugs called "bath salts."

A bill unanimously approved by the Senate Wednesday and previously approved by the House would ban seven specific chemical compounds.

According to a legislative staff briefing memo, the drugs to be banned are derivatives of a psychoactive substance with stimulant effects similar to those of amphetamines.

Street names of the drugs include ivory wave, ivory snow, ocean snow, vanilla sky, purple wave, zoon 2, red dove, wish rush and scarface.

The bill is an emergency measure so it would take effect immediately upon the signature of Gov. Jan Brewer.
