Arizona high court to explain campaign limits ruling

PHOENIX - The Arizona Supreme Court on Wednesday will issue an opinion explaining its December decision to allow higher campaign contribution limits approved by the Legislature to take effect.

Under the new limits, candidates for statewide and legislative office are allowed to raise thousands of dollars more each election.

Majority Republicans in the Legislature pushed for the higher limits, saying they're needed to remedy unconstitutionally low limits and to fight against political groups increasingly using independent funds to influence elections.

Democrats and the commission that oversees Arizona's public campaign financing system argued that the higher limits run afoul of legal protections for voter-approved laws.

The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission wanted the limits blocked, arguing the 1998 law creating the campaign financing system set clear limits on donations.
