Kids compete in Arizona Spelling Bee

PHOENIX - Think you're a master speller?

Try out this word for size: Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the 45-letter word refers to a lung disease caused by the breathing in of "very fine silicate or quartz dust."

Jack, 11, will join other students in downtown Phoenix today for the Arizona spelling bee.

The Arizona Education Foundation Spelling Bee will take place at 1 p.m. at the Eight/AZ PBS in downtown Phoenix.

The winner of the spelling bee will go on to compete in the Scripps' National Spelling Bee .

How do you prepare for a spelling bee?

Jack said he studies a bunch of word lists, memorizing how each word is spelled, while also having his dad quiz him.

The 11-year-old also says it is important to read a lot.
