Take free water safety classes for free over the summer!

Cigna HealthCare of Arizona and the City of Phoenix Aquatic Section are partnering for the 30th year to provide free water safety and fun programs for children and teens, as well as discounted water aerobics classes for seniors.

You can sign up Thursday evening. The classes will be broken down by age group. Participants will be learning different skills depending on what group you're in.

For the kids and teens, classes run from the beginning of June to the middle of July. There are 29 different pools across the Valley.

People who are 50 or older will get discounts for water aerobics classes. Prices will vary depending on which class you choose, but most classes last about two weeks, and there are 12 pools across the Valley.

Here's the age breakdown:

Cub Club - ages 7 to 10
Discovery Guards - ages 11 to 13
Junior Lifeguard Training - ages 14 to 15
Lifeguard Academy - ages 15 to 17
Discounted Water Aerobics - ages 50 and older

The specifics on each level and what the classes entail: 

Cub Club

Children ages seven to 10 learn basic water safety skills from a lifeguard mentor, includi?ng assisting in a water emergency, when to call 9-1-1 and basic swimming instructions. Participants meet twice a week for five weeks. Cub Club is available at all 29 pools. The program starts the week of June 6 and concludes at the Cub Club/Discovery Guard Olympics Wednesday, July 13 from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at Encanto Pool.

Discovery Guards

Children between the ages of 11 and 13 will experience teamwork and cooperation while learning basic first aid, rescue breathing and safety around water with a certified lifeguard. Boating and Personal Flotation Device skills will also be taught using an actual boat! Participants meet twice a week for five weeks. Discovery Guards is available at all 29 pools and space is limited. The program starts the week of June 6 and concludes at the Cub Club/Discovery Guard Olympics Wednesday, July 13 from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at Encanto Pool.

Junior Lifeguard Training

Teens between the ages of 14 and 15 will learn lifeguarding techniques, First Aid and will be trained in CPR. Leadership and responsibility are emphasized, as well as community contribution with volunteer hours at the pool. Successful completion of the Junior Lifeguard program reduces the cost of lifeguard training. Participants meet three to four times a week for six weeks. Junior Lifeguard Training is available at all 29 City of Phoenix pools. The program starts the week of June 6 and concludes at the Junior Lifeguard Olympics Saturday, July 23 from 8 to 10 a.m. at El Prado Pool.

Lifeguard Academy

This program is for teens ages 15 years to 17 who have participated in a previous Cigna Summer program. Upon successful completion of the class, participants will obtain all necessary certifications to become a lifeguard. Lifeguard Academy is available at all 29 pools. The program is June 15, 18, 25 and 26.

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics classes are available at a discount to seniors ages 50 and older. The discounted cost for seniors is $5 for a 35-minute class (full price is $15) and $7.50 for a 60-minute class (full price is $22.50). There are four sessions available throughout the summer beginning June 6 and each class is two weeks long. Class sizes are limited and available at 12 City of Phoenix pools.
