Over 1,900 cats and dogs in Arizona found new homes over the weekend during "Maddie's Pet Adoption Days."
Megan Rose said 1,346 dogs and 647 cats were adopted at Animal shelters across the Valley Sunday afternoon.
She said that number exceeded the organization's expectation of 1,500 adoptions.
During the event, the Arizona Animal Welfare League and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals waived adoption fees hoping to get as many animals into new homes as possible.
Each animal was spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and up-to-date on vaccinations.
Twelve groups, including the HALO Animal Rescue, Arizona Humane Society, Maricopa County Animal Care and Control and the Phoenix Animal Care Coalition 911, also participated in the event.
