MCSO detention officer shot, killed in front of west Phoenix home

PHOENIX - Authorities have identified a Maricopa County Sheriff's detention officer who died after being shot in the driveway of his home Thursday morning.

Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump says the MCSO employee was shot near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road while apparently getting ready to go to work around 4 a.m.

The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Jorge Vargas.

According to Crump, a person was seen running from the scene at the time when neighbors heard shots fired and discovered the wounded victim.

"I never experienced anything like this before. You know it was so close it could have been my life. I just hate that it was him you know? Because he had a family, a young wife, a baby. All left behind because an individual wanted to bring harm to this man," one neighbor said.

Authorities are looking for a Hispanic male in his 20s who was wearing a white shirt.

There is no known motive at  this time.

The shooting occurred in a Phoenix neighborhood that uses a Tolleson address.

During a Thursday afternoon news conference, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Vargas had been with the department about seven years.

Arpaio said Vargas was wearing some of his work uniform when he was shot. He also said Vargas would probably not have been carrying a weapon.

He said Vargas leaves behind a wife and 5-year-old son.

"We don't appreciate people killing our deputy sheriffs and officers that work in the jail system,"Arpaio said. "So watch out, we're ready for battle and going to take whatever action we need."
