TOLLESON, AZ - A candle light vigil was held Friday night for two Department of Corrections officers who were killed in a motorcycle crash earlier this week.
Family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of 35-year-old John Ollis and 30-year-old Skye Orozco at the site of the accident.
Now the site has flowers, candles and a “Rest in Peace” sign with pictures of Orozco and Ollis that form a memorial. The vigil drew a somber crowd who reflected on the officers.
“I’m going to miss his sense of humor, his jokes, he could make you laugh about anything,” Ollis’ nephew, Daniel Odonnell, 27, said.
“Her smiles aren’t going to be around us but in our hearts,” Orozco’s aunt, J. Louise Navarro, said.
Ollis and Orozco were riding a motorcycle Wednesday night when a tractor trailer reportedly turned left onto 99th Avenue in front of the pair. They were ejected from the bike, which slid 500 feet into a ditch, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Brandon Jones said.
The driver of the tractor trailer, Carlos Moran, 53, said he tried to flag down help with his cell phone light, but three vehicles did not see him and struck Ollis and Orozco, Jones said.
Jones said it is too early to know whether charges will be filed or citations issued.
