Surprise Police: 2-year-old reunited with parents after discovered outside alone

SURPRISE, AZ - A toddler was reunited with his parents after he was discovered walking around outside Sunday morning wearing only a diaper and T-shirt, authorities said.

Lt. John Bacon of the Surprise Police Department confirmed that the 2-year-old child was reunited with his parents and is safe.

Authorities received reports of a child walking around outside near 113th Avenue and Bell Road.

Police spent time knocking on doors at a nearby apartment complex in an attempt to locate the parents.

Tracie Gauthier lives near the complex. She was on her way to work this morning when a woman came up to her with the boy in her arms.

"He wasn't crying, he was just shivering. He was cold," Gauthier said.

The child's mother finally showed up about two hours later and said her son must have gotten out Sunday morning while everyone was sleeping.

One dad, who also has a 2-year-old son, understands how this could just be an accident.

"We have to constantly lock our doors here, you know, bolt lock them because he's already learned how to Macgyver his way out of the house," he said.

It's not clear how long the boy was wandering on his own.

Surprise police called in Child Protective Services as a precaution before the boy's mom showed up.

CPS could investigate the incident further.
