SURPRISE, AZ - A man who refused to come out of a Surprise home after police were called has been taken into custody.
Surprise police Sgt. Mike Donovan said that around 1:30 p.m. officers responded to a domestic violence assault call near Reems Road and Grand Avenue where an adult male allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend.
The female and two children fled the residence and are safe, but the suspect then barricaded himself in the residence and refused to come out.
The person who called in the incident told police the suspect made a statement that the wanted to die at the hands of police.
Donovan said the suspect was seen waving a handgun through the window and in the open garage.
Air15 video showed a heavy SWAT presence around the home and neighborhood.
At 3:30 p.m. video showed police bringing a man out of the home in handcuffs.
No one was injured, however there were indications that the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Paul Alegria III, had taken medication and was taken to a local hospital to be checked out.
Donovan said once released, Alegria will be booked into jail on charges of assault domestic violence and disorderly conduct domestic violence.
